Sad to say, there appears to be a loose connection inside this part. Extensive testing, in and out of the car, showed that the park/neutral connector is very sensitive, and a simple tap with the hand can break the connection. The "good" news is that, through all this testing, the original FoMoCo part proved to be ok. I thought the park/neutral contact had just worn thin with time, but it turns out I need to adjust the shifter. So the original is back in the car.
