LH rotation is typically used on 4sM/Ts and RH rotation is used in all others (A/T, T-5, TK, 3sM/T, etc). Transmissions with the speedo cable hole on the drivers (LH) side typically use RH rotation gears. Transmissions with the speedo cable hole on the passenger (RH) side typically use LH rotation gears. See 17292-1, 17292-1A for retainer clip options.

Corrected my speedometer in my 1997 F 150 2wd. Had the transmission replaced and the speedometer was reading 60 mph and gps said 50 mph. The replacement tranny had 17 tooth gear so I ordered 19 and 20 just in case, guessed the 20 tooth and was correct. Keeping the 19 in case I go with different street tires in the future.

Pretty easy fix. Hardest part was trying to figure out which gear needed. Even if you know the rear gear size etc.You need to be a Shelden from Big Bang to figure out which speedo gear you need. Use a GPS or have another person pace you with a known speed. If your speedometer reads 65 and the GPS shows 55 you need a gear with more teeth. Yes more gear teeth means less speed on the speedometer. The next trick how many teeth. You have to take your speedo gear out of your trans. Count the teeth and either right or left teeth. Buy a couple gears they are not that expensive.Spend a couple more bucks and get the retainer clip. N.P.D. will have what need.
