Loose steel fell out of it looked like drillbit shavings

The metal strands are packing to prevent oil droplets from being ingested into the air cleaner fouling the filter. The same exact strands were packed inside the original cap that your car rolled off the factory assembly line with. If you had a strand or two loose that fell out, I would just poke around real good on what’s left inside to make sure the rest is secure, then you’re good to go.
You’re not going to find another correct cap out there that
does not have metal strands packed inside it. It’s a functional necessity.
