Verified Buyer Electronic Instrument Voltage Regulator

This constant voltage regulator woks much better than the non-solid state unit which I used before. gauges work perfect, no erratic movement. I would definately rec. upgrade to this solid state version.

Purchased two of these units. First one failed in 10 minutes. Thought I may have had a severe voltage surge from charging system. All checked fine, 14.4 volts. Ordered another< failed within 20 minutes. Found an NOS unit still in the box for the same price. Works great. You decide.

We sell tons of these, and this is the first issue like this that we have received. I can only reiterate that the battery must be disconnected during installation, and/or some random static discharge, could fry the unit. We're sorry that you had trouble with two of them, and will diligently monitor ongoing sales.

I installed both regulators at the same time. The temperature and gas gauges worked great for about 15 minutes and then stopped working. I installed per the instructions. I checked the mounting and connections and still get the same results. Maybe I didn't get something right. Will have to re-check.

Electronic Instrument Voltage Regulator

Chose to go with the Electronic Regulator upon replacing every Electrical Harness and Wiring Feed(s) in my '66 Coupe. Rather pricey, but...so far so good!

Installed per instructions and used the screw provided. Never worked. Fuel would read when ignition was turned on, but when car was started, fuel and all other gauges wouldn’t work. Contacted NPD, waiting on a reply.

Product works as it should. Although it doesn’t mount in same location as original it was a basic install but wish there was pictures so that I knew exactly where and how new install went.

Tried two of these with the exact same result: on my '67 factory air car, this IVR drops offline (e.g. fuel and temp gauges go to zero) every time the AC clutch disengages. Same result whether ignition switch is in ACC or run position. Interestingly both units had no problem when the A/C was turned on, only when turned off. Units would then reset only with ignition turned off then turned back on again which made it useless for driving when using A/C. Both units installed in strict accordance with instructions. Switched to a Scott Drake solid state IVR (which unlike these had the benefit of installing in the factory location) and have had zero problems since. Wish I had tried the Drake unit first and avoided the hassle of repeated R&I of the instrument cluster not to mention having to drill a hole in my speedometer housing to install this unit. I'm sure this would work fine in a non-A/C car but unfortunately it didn't work for me.

This should have nothing to do with A/C. These take the 12 volts coming into the dash gauges and steps it down to 5 volts where it enters the gauge. If the A/C is is surging voltage and blowing the IVR then there could be other problems that are not the fault of the part but the part is being blown by the other issue.. Electrical issues can be maddening, so this reply is simply in an attempt to add context, as we have sold thousands of these regulators without issue.

This is a followup to the comments you posted on my review. Actually the A/C clutch has everything to do with the IVR as you manufacture it. You are using a simple linear step down regulator with an integrated chip and no input filter. Regardless of the manufacturer these all have overcurrent and thermal protection. The A/C clutch draws 4 amps which is supplied through the ignition switch and the main underdash harness. When the compressor clutch cuts out the IVR "sees" a momentary line transient from the load dump, before the alternator can adjust its output, that exceeds the typical ~2 amp overcurrent threshold on these units. The IVR will then shut down, by design, to protect the IC until it resets the next time power is supplied, which is exactly what was happening in my case. The reason the Drake unit doesn't have this problem is that they use a current limiting resistor, clearly visible in the product photos, as a filter between the input side and the step down regulator which eliminates this transient. Also, a non-A/C car will not have transients of this magnitude so I'm not surprised you are not experiencing issues on the majority of these that you sell given the relatively low numbers of factory air cars. As a side note, the OE mechanical bimetallic regulator would be totally unaffected by these transients. So please check the data sheet on regulator you are using to manufacture these and tell me what the overcurrent limit is. If it is in the 2 amp range as I suspect then these units are not suitable for A/C cars.

This product did not work. I ended up going with the original style voltage reducer. Now the hassel of trying to get refunded.
