Verified Buyer CONTROL ARM ASSY, UPPER, BY HOTCHKIS

The description Hotchkis provides for these control arms does a terrible job of explaining exactly how they provide all the benefits they claim. I had to contact Hotchkis repeatedly and after asking my technical questions and being repeatedly ignored they finally responded with some really good info about their upper arms. This info is nowhere to be found in their online presence but these control arms relocate the ball joint to the rear of the car for increased positive caster and toward the cross shaft a little to increase the static negative camber. Additionally, the plane angle of the ball joint is modified to accommodate the Shelby drop. In fact, the installation instructions include performing the Shelby/Arning drop. Don’t buy these arms unless you plan on making that modification to your car. I recommend reviewing the installation instructions on the Hotchkis website before you purchase these. There are no instructions included with the arms; you have to get them online. There is no mention whatsoever in the instructions that there is a right hand and a left-hand control arm and there are no differentiating marks on the arms themselves, you just have to know. To discern left from right I placed the arms, both right side up, one on top of the other with the cross shafts pinned with 6” socket extensions to sort out which arm had the ball joint location moved aft for left and right. I’m in the middle of the installation as I write this so I can’t report how the car drives with them. I will say they are beautifully constructed. A few installation notes are in order. You’ll need to press the studs out of you spring perches and replace them with longer bolts which are provided in the kit. These bolts are a little short IMO. They end up flush with the top of the provided Nylock nuts – there should be minimum 3 clean threads exiting the nut. For reference, I’m installing the Open Tracker Racing spring perches – I think the shafts are the same thickness as stock. The kit provides Nylock nuts to attach the control arms. The max service temp for Nylocks is 210° F and they are located right next to the exhaust manifolds. I’m replacing the nuts with distorted thread locking nuts. The bolts used to fabricate the bolt plates are longer than necessary which may make tool clearance difficult for final torquing of the nuts. You can’t replace the bolts because they are spot welded to the bolt plates, you may want to grind them down a bit shorter. Perhaps they are longer for folks who have reinforced their shock towers with additional metal. You will want to double check the installation torque on the ball joint mounting hardware. It’s 5/16-18 GR8 hardware and should be torqued to 25 ft-lbs, the hardware on my arms was not even close to tight enough. The Delrin bushing require silicone grease. Hotchkis claims to prove some of this grease but my arms came without any. I’m sure if there was grease included it would have been one of those little ketchup packet type pouches. Try getting that through a zerk. I bought a 14 oz tube of silicone grease and a separate grease gun just for these bushings. I recommend greasing the cross shaft bushings very thoroughly before installing the arms, rotating the shafts around and around while pumping the grease to get plenty of it distributed in there. The Delrin bushings are replaceable but it will require taking the arms off the car to do so, so I plan on keeping them greased to the max. TLDR: These arms are beautiful and provide an improvement over the stock suspension geometry. I would buy them again and I would recommend to a friend. A friend with $1200 to spend on control arms. Hah!
