The "hat" part of the brass bushing is thicker than the original nylon bushing. This prevents the end of the rod from pushing far enough to be able to put a cotter pin or spring clip - since the hole in the rod is obstructed. To solve the problem, I grinded or sanded off about 1 mm from the "hat" and then I was able to get the spring clip through the hole in the end of the rod.
